The Power of Aesthetics
June 7, 2008
As a designer, and I’ve heard this a lot from other designers, I’m quick to defend myself as not just a “decorator,” someone who puts a shiny, pretty coat onto things. Design is about problem solving, clear communication, something bigger than “pretty.” And while all that is true, I think I sometimes devalue “pretty.” This TED Talk by Bill Strickland reminds you of the power of beautiful things. By building an arts center for the disadvantaged that is not only functional, but beautiful, he shows them that he values them as human beings. The “pretty” is good for the soul. If you have 30min, watch this talk, it’s absolutely inspiring.
“You must be prepared to act on your dreams, just in case they do come true.” Bill Strickland
